Cannonau di Sardegna DOC
Alcohol content: 13.5% vol
Grape variety: 100% Cannonau
Tasting notes: vibrant ruby-red color. On the nose, fruity aromas of wild blackberries, blueberries, and black currants are accompanied by floral hints of roses, violets, and juniper berries. On the palate, the wine is warm and enveloping, yet balanced by refreshing acidity.
Production area: Sardinia, Northwest of the Province of Sassari
Soil: alluvial, sandy-clay loam
Vineyard altitude: 30 meters above sea level
Training system: spur-pruned cordon
Planting density: 4,000 vines per hectare
Harvest: from early September, manually collected in crates
Yield per hectare: 6,000-7,000 kg (60-70 quintals)
Aging: small oak barrels
Serving temperature: 16-18°C
Wine name origin: As Sebastiano Satta wrote, even the winemaking process becomes a “mysterious birth,” and when the must ferments “during the night […] the younger children descend half-undressed into the dark cellar and stay for hours listening to that song, which may accompany them for a lifetime.” The cyclicality of the vine naturally evokes the Mother Goddess. In Alghero, the Domus de janas (fairy houses)-tiny dwellings inhabited by legendary miniature creatures tirelessly weaving exquisite fabrics on golden looms-testify to the typically Sardinian reverence for earth and fertility deities.
